NO CELL PHONES OR ELECTRONICS

Please do not send snacks, other than for the ride to the camp. No snacks are allowed in the cabins.

Housing
There will be 9 - 16 students and one or more chaperones in each cabin. Girls and boys will be in separate cabins.

Food
Healthy and delicious food is made by scratch at the camp! There will be a vegan item available at each meal. No pork will be served. Please do not send snacks, other than for the ride to the camp. No snacks are allowed in the cabins.

Activities
Small and large group activities, both indoor and outdoor, focused lessons that utilize hands-on, experiential learning. These lessons emphasize observation, critical thinking and teamwork.

Yes, we need chaperones. If you are interested in being a chaperone, please contact your child’s teacher. The number of chaperones will be based on the number of students & staff attending. Be ready for plenty of fresh air and movement!

If you are selected to be a chaperone, the cost of chaperones attending camp is $105. Use the Widji Payment link to pay online for the trip. Cash and checks should be given to classroom teachers.

Widjiwagan’s mission is to develop in young people a respect for self, community and the environment through wilderness adventure and environmental education. Our wilderness setting, strong program and talented staff provide learning opportunities which empower students to invest in themselves and an environmentally sustainable future. Participants in our program will gain:

• Heightened awareness and appreciation of the natural environment
• Understanding of ecological concepts
• Knowledge of cultural and natural history of the region
• Recognition of the relationship between human attitudes, behaviors and the environment
• Problem solving and decision making skills
• Development, learning and growth

Brief summary of Widji's risk reduction strategies: Fall 2022, all staff were wilderness first responders, and they also have an EMT on staff. All groups travel with a walkie-talkie and a big backpack of supplies (snacks, many extra layers, extra batteries for walkie talkie, sleeping bag, thermarest pad, stove, fuel, pot, tarp, first aid kit, and more). The program director has a walkie talkie on all day to communicate with Widji staff if a medical event comes up. The most experienced staff live in the house that is most visible and easy to get to (Anaktuvuk Pass). This is so if something were to happen at night, a chaperone could easily find Widji staff to help with an emergency.

Widjiwagan is about 25 minutes from the hospital in Ely. They have vehicles available to take people into the clinic if needed.
